Summary: Draco's thoughts after the battle at Hogwarts

And for my maiden post, I must stay true to my first fan fiction love -- Harry Potter. I wrote this immediately after reading the Half-Blood Prince... at that point I had stayed up for about 27 hours straight – so I was just a wee bit tired.   : )

It was quiet. The only sound was brittle wind rattling the long dead trees as they stretched their twisted limbs toward the grey sky. All was grey it seemed. The knee length grass, bending in the wind lost all of its golden luster. The frozen ground had the same hue as the granite rocks that littered this barren place. All was hard, cold and desolate.

And then there was the child.

No more than a boy, though he used to consider himself mature and strong. However, it was clear to him now he was not truly who he thought he was. His whole life was focused on portraying a composed and sinister mirror of himself for the world to see; allowing him to hide in some shadowed corner deep inside himself. He was alone... and frightened. He always had been.

The mirror had been shattered and he made no effort to conceal the fact that he was now small and trembling. His legs were drawn up close to him, his arms tucked around them, and his face half hidden by his knees. One could only see his eyes, shut tight as if trying to block out the dismal light coming from the sky above.

What have I done? ... How can I face him now? ... Who am I without him?

I have failed.

“Come Draco, we cannot stay here,” it was a cold voice that spoke to the boy. The child looked up to see his professor looking down at him, offering him his hand.

He did it to... He has failed... He let him go... Why did he let him go?

“What are we going to do?” the boy said softly, more to himself than to his companion. “What will become of us?”

Hurray, Hurray Avocado Toast!!!
